"It’s the balance of crunching guitar and unsettling percussion coupled with edgy fiddle tunes that forms the musical palette for Call to Arms…. As debut’s go this is darn near to perfect." - Rating 9/10 - Americana UK
"“Call to Arms” is experimental Americana." - Music Riot UK
"masterpieces of delicacy and haunting gorgeousness which demonstrate how peerless and symbiotic is the duo’s rapport and how skilled is their acute blending of voices and textures." - Folk Radio UK

TORONTO, ON - NOVEMBER 10, 2017 - TODAY, Toronto-based duo Harrow Fair, comprised of Miranda Mulholland and Andrew Penner, release a striking new cover of The Rankin Family's Juno award winning single Fare Thee Well Love. Harrow Fair's cover of this beloved Rankin Family song started on a tour of Northern Ireland earlier this year and has closed their shows from there to New York City. "We played our first UK tour this spring and sang this cover at a beautiful church in Northern Ireland;" shares Miranda. "We have been closing our shows with it ever since - all over the UK and USA. We decided to do a live recording at Revolution Recording in Toronto and to bring it home for our show in Ottawa at the NAC on November 11th." The mix of their raw sound and 90s nostalgia is haunting and powerful on this cover.

The band returned to one of their favourite studios, Toronto's Revolution Recording, to capture this new cover live off the floor; previous sessions they have recorded the iconic Chris Isaak song Wicked Game, and the Memphis Minnie cover When The Levee Breaks (also made famous by Led Zeppelin). Harrow Fair have tales to tell of their 2017 adventures - from Folk Alliance to the UK release of Call To Arms, followed by a tour of England and Northern Ireland, a trip on the high seas performing on Sixthman's RockBoat with The Trews, Red Wanting Blue and Better Than Ezra; Broadway performances in July with Soulpepper Theatre Company on New York City’s iconic 42nd street, performances at Waterstock, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Kingsville Folk Festival, Sawdust City Music Festival, Jackson Triggs Amphitheatre, Folk Alliance International, a 2nd UK tour, and upcoming dates with Elliott Brood and The Skydiggers.
What’s The Story About Harrow Fair?
Harrow Fair is Miranda Mulholland (formerly of Great Lake Swimmers) & Andrew Penner (Sunparlour Players). One part stomping songs that echo early country and rock n roll. The other gritty ballads that sound sweet and haunted. This duo’s evocative and rapidly expanding collection of songs, such as Hangnail, The Hunt and Told A Lie To My Heart, are utterly foreign, oddly familiar and deeply gratifying. Debut full-length album Call To Arms is out now.
Praise From Media:
"Call to Arms instantly declares Harrow Fair to be a veritable Canadian powerhouse of hoof-thumping Americana as first track Hangnail hits the floor running and never lets up with a booming kick-drum and an insistent guitar hook. ..And that sets the tone for this excellent album." - Americana UK
“…a heavenly excursion into soulful country. Their impassioned, touching interpretation of Hank Williams' "Told a Lie to My Heart" is just bewitching.” - John Doyle, Globe and Mail
"But whether gentle and plaintive or upfront and thrusting, the duo’s vocals have a feeling of being right there on the emotional edge, where the outcome could easily go either way (or else break down completely) – and that quality sure is tremendously exciting." - Folk Radio UK
"When Miranda Mulholland and Andrew Penner create music together, something delightful happens. Their combined experiences allow Mulholland and Penner to show off fantastically executed string work with both the fiddle and guitar. Call to Arms, the Canadian duo’s record debut, spoons out doses of rock, roots, Southern charm and just about everything else along the way.” - Elmore Magazine
“There’s something a little eerie about Harrow Fair, a she-he duo of excellent pedigree. Theirs is a brand of mountain music, moonlit and minimalist, heard from a distance. There once came a time to pay the fiddler, but someone forgot, and now Harrow Fair is collecting on the debt.” -Brad Wheeler, Globe and Mail
“…theirs is a match that can pull out all the stops (heck, they wring 'em out, every last one).”
- Chris Young, Toronto Star
